Youth Wrestling Returns to Homewood

Beginning October 23, 2023 at HHS

After a one year hiatus, we are thrilled to announce the return of youth wrestling to Homewood.  With the leadership of HHS Wrestling Coach Frankie McKeown and the expert staffing of Stronghold Wrestling Club, our program is set to provide an unmatched wrestling experience for our young athletes. As we embark on this rejuvenated chapter, we invite you to join us in molding the future champions of not only the mat but life itself. Dive into a world where discipline meets passion, and character is built one takedown at a time.

What Commitment is Required?

Youth wrestling is a highly customizable sport.  Each family decides the type of commitment they will make on an individual basis. Some families may opt to practice once or twice a week without intending on competing on Saturdays (basically using it as a strength and conditioning program). Others may practice 4 days a week and do private lessons as well as competing in a tournament every weekend. Tournament sign up is individual and optional. There is plenty of flexibility to make what you want out of it and there are no requirements. Just like anything else, the more they put into it the more they will get out of it, and we understand that every family will have different goals and expectations. We are happy to be able to offer a program that will cater to anyone from the recreational novice to the experienced wrestler competing for a state title.

Why

At the Homewood Youth Wrestling Club, our mission is to empower the young individuals of Homewood, AL, through the sport of wrestling. We aim to cultivate an environment that fosters discipline, teamwork, physical fitness, and sportsmanship. By focusing on both the technical and personal development of our athletes, we strive to instill in them not just the skills to excel on the mat, but the confidence and character to succeed in life. Together, we work to build champions in the sport of wrestling and champions in the community of Homewood.

How

Thanks to the support of Coach Frankie McKeown we will be using the high school wrestling room and have high school wrestlers on the mat to help instruct and act as "Big Brothers."

Practices will be led by Stronghold Wrestling Coaches Gabe Hixenbaugh and Cole Thomas.  Learn more about them on the About page.

We also encourage parents to help on the mat, as all youth sports are more successful with parents involved.

What, When, and Where

We offer a high-paced youth practice designed to keep your young athlete engaged and learning the entire time. We start every session with tumbling, isometric exercises, and stretching to get the muscles warmed up. Following the warm-up is an introduction to the basics of wrestling. Each practice is finished up with an exciting game.  Youth season runs from Oct 23 - Late January.

Our Program

The Stronghold Wrestling program challenges the systems of the body, especially the cardiovascular, muscular and skeletal systems. We advise that if your child has any physical ailment, is taking medication or is otherwise not in excellent physical condition suitable for strenuous activity, their participation may be injurious to them.

Stronghold Wrestling goes all-out to create a safe and fun environment for our fans and to develop young upcoming athletes as wrestlers. Stronghold Wrestling also helps those parents that volunteered as coaches, team parents, officials and staff members an unhindered opportunity to manage a successful program.

For the most part, Stronghold Wrestling never has direct responsibility for chaperoning the conduct of youth participants during its events. Stronghold Wrestling relies on coaches, parents, and chaperones to ensure that every young wrestler attending a Stronghold Wrestling-sponsored event is safe and is aware of the sanctions for misbehavior. Coaches, chaperones, and parents bear the responsibility for giving youth wrestling participants the rules of behavior and their sanctions - failure to share this information do not excuse any inappropriate behavior on the part of youth wrestlers nor does it affect Stronghold Wrestling's ability to hand out sanctions.
